The three electrostatic accelerators at the TIARA had no damage when the Tohoku earthquake happened on March 11, 2011. But, they could not be operated until end of April, due to the influence of planned power outage and keep out into the controlled area for radiation. These accelerators additionally operated on Saturday for twelve days in order to compensate for the lost experiment time. Therefore, the yearly operation time had kept the same level as the ordinary one. The tandem accelerator has stopped leakage of the SF$$_{6}$$ gas from the base flange on the tank by the Viton gasket of rectangular cross section at the new type. The ion implanter could generate two kinds of fullerene ions by a mixed material of ions and a controlled temperature of the oven without exchange of ion source.

Charge state for internuclear distance of cluster constituent ions penetrating through a foil

Availability of the swift cluster ion is expected as new irradiation source, because the cluster ion bombardment to the solid brings irradiation effects different from the monatomic ion bombardment at the same speed. This unique effect, cluster effect, is caused via the physical processes that a number of high energy ions within a narrow spatiotemporal region make the high density excited states and that the constituent ion influences with respect to one another. For understanding of the expression mechanism of cluster effect, detailed investigation of these two physical processes are needed. In this study, with a focus on the interaction between constituent ions, we developed an analyzing method that shows quantitatively the relationship between the internuclear distance of constituent ions and their charge states, using the Coulomb explosion imaging technique, to investigate the contribution of the screened Coulomb potential to the cluster effect.

We report on the current status of the system technology of the AMS system based on the National Electrostatics Corporation Model 15SDH-2 (5 MV) Pelletron Accelerator at the Tono Geoscience Center, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency. Following two topics are presented. (1) Optimization of the gas ionization counter with gas cell, and (2) Finding the solution of the problem of the ESA (Electrostatic Spherical Analyzer) at the outlet of the ion source.
